Aloha Parade Participants:

We are preparing for the 20th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday celebration on Monday, January 21, 2008. The ideals of civil and human rights will again be in the forefront of the celebration. If you, your organization or group believe in these ideals, please join us.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Coalition-Hawaii is honored to extend an invitation to you and your organization to participate in the Dr. King Parade and festivities to be held on his holiday, Monday, January 21, 2008.

As this will be our 20th anniversary, in addition to the parade, other 2008 holiday activities are being schedled. With details to follow, those now include:

    • Annual Nagasaki Peace Bell Ringing Ceremony on the Civic Center grounds of Honolulu Hale.
    • Post parade Unity Rally at Kapiolani Park with food, community booths, and other vendors.
    • A performance of Black Boy, the acclaimed adaptation of Richard Wright's landmark 1945 autobiography. This poignant coming-of-age story traces the many boyhood struggles of one of the most important African-American writers of the 20th century. Starring Broadway actor Charles Holt, the one man show is aimed squarely at family audiences and is scheduled for UH-Manoa's Campus Center Ballroom at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2008. Holt is a veteran of the New York production of "The Lion King" and "Law & Order." Black Boy is being graciously sponsored by the UH Manoa Office of Multicultural Student Services. There is no admission charge but is a $3 fee if parking on campus. The contact number for Black Boy is 956-7348.

Registration fee for the parade is $75.00. While the registration fee and application will be accepted on the day of the parade at Magic Island on January 21, 2008, we asked that you fax the application as soon as possible to help facilitate our planning. Your parade entrance application can be faxed to 808-988-1777 (Oahu) at anytime prior to the event. Make your tax deductible check or money order out to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Coalition-Hawaii. Mail to MLK Coalition at 590 Farrington Highway, #210 POB 163, Kapolei, Hawai`i 96707. We have wonderful and meaningful activities planned for all in the memory of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.! We want our schools to participate this year, so please pass the word and help them join the parade!
